Vintage Persian Hamadan Rug
Iran, Hamadan region, circa 1950s to 1970s
Hand knotted wool on cotton
315 × 155 cm
A Persian Hamadan rug with an unusually strong, graphic composition.
The warm camel field tempers the strength of the design, offset by a bold central medallion and a deep aubergine border of rosettes, stepped forms and geometric motifs. Jewel toned accents of teal, emerald, coral, saffron and blue bring richness throughout. Richly patterned without feeling heavy, the balance of colour and scale gives it a surprisingly modern presence.
Beautifully preserved, with a dense, soft wool pile and exceptional colour throughout. The elongated proportions and distinctive drawing give the rug a character that feels individual and difficult to replicate.
