Turkish Kilim
Kırşehir, Central Anatolia, Turkey
circa 1950 to 1970
Handwoven wool on wool
215 × 315 cm
An Anatolian kilim with a strong geometric composition in muted rose and indigo, layered with aubergine, apricot, ochre and ivory.
Handwoven in wool on wool, repeating hooked medallions are framed by a graphic serrated border, with subtle shifts in colour characteristic of village weaving. Remarkably well preserved, the rug remains in excellent condition for its age, with only gentle wear to the original fringed ends.
Generous in scale and rich in colour, the bold geometry gives the piece a commanding presence and makes it an exceptional example of an older Anatolian weaving.
