Provincial Chinese Cabinet
China, early 20th century
Painted lacquer on hardwood
126L × 41D × 91H cm
A provincial Chinese cabinet finished in worn cinnabar red lacquer with hand painted ceremonial vessel motifs across the doors. The low form is fitted with three cupboard doors above a row of drawers, retaining its aged hardware and heavily weathered surface throughout.
Areas of worn lacquer reveal deep reds, umber and exposed timber beneath, creating rich tonal variation across the piece. The softened surface and visible signs of long term use give the cabinet a layered, time worn character.
